If your front and passenger side mount are shot, the engine may be moving enough to allow the distributor to hit the underside of the hood. Cap may move enough to leave the correct clearance with the rotor, but not come off. Miss ensues but then goes away. Check the padding on the underside of the hood, if you see abrasions in the area of the distributor, then replace the front mount, $35 part, 2 hours DIY tops.
