although I have not tested on Saabs, method has proven itself over the years.
The so called "cold timing method".
1. Pull #1 plugwire off, and also #1 plug (or use a spare plug).
2. Loosen dist. clamp & rotate distributor (just get it moving). Hopefully you have some clue "about" where it used to be, so get it close to the old position.
3. Install the plug into the #1 wire, and rest the plug against a good ground on the engine.
4. Turn engine until you have 14/16 degrees lined up with the mark on the plastic flywheel cover. OOPS, the PITA part, is you must also know that #1 cylinder is loaded to fire & not exhausting, so you must pull the valve cover (you said you were broke) and make sure both IN and EX valves are closed on #1; if EX valves are open you are on the exhaust stroke, or 360 degrees out on the crank...then you must turn the engine another 360 degrees to get #1 into firing position. I would turn the engine using the big nut on the bottom HB crank pulley, either 29 or 32mm IIRC.
4. Turn ignition switch "ON", but don't crank starter.
5. Slowly turn distributor in one direction until spark jumps the #1 plug. No spark, then turn the other direction until spark jumps.
6. Clamp down the distributor clamp.
This old school method tried & true for old American iron....not sure the electronics on the C900 will cooperate, but WTF, give it a try.
