Revs drop off when off the accelerator & it stalls

I have a 1991 900 spg and when I first start the car in the morning it kicks in as normal.
My problem is when I stop the car and switch of the engin (what ever the distance between stops) then return to the car after a while the car is hard to start and I have to keep the revs up or it will cut out.
Also, as well as running unevenly at this time, if I come off the accelerator the revs just drop off and now the engin is starting to cut out.
This car is my life line for work and any urgent feedback would be very apreciated
