Jomo,
Given the prevalance of limestone caves in KY, it's almost certain that the blockage is calcium deposits from using hard water to dilute the coolant in your cooling system. Coincidentally, that particular engine previously had the worst buildup of hard water deposits that I have ever seen in it, the result of the PO using horrifically hard water (you should have seen their kitchen sink)to top up a car with a coolant leak. That alloy housing that carries the drain plug was filled solid with deposits (over 1 inch thick!). But there wasn't a trace left when I was done rebuilding it. The housing is an unswept area in the coolant flow and is prone to accretion, though.
I would just poke a screwdriver through the blockage or, if you can't do that, remove the housing, clean and re-install it. It's that rebuild job that made me a convert to distilled water for diluting anti-freeze.
