There are interesting things happening in the oil world, that may render irrelevant for most purposes (and keep in mind that no test has ever shown that an engine will last longer in real life if run on synthetic).
One is that there are new methods of processing dino oil, like hydrocracking, which allow remaking the dino oil into something very close to synthetic, without going the full synthetic route (actually a lot of the oils sold as synthetics are actually just these processed dinos, there was a big lawsuit about whether they could call the synthetics or not). The other is that the new SM standard is difficult enough to meet that many of the better brands are starting to use increasing quantities of these highly processed dino oils in their entry level products, so with many of the SM oils you are getting a synthetic blend for the price of an old style dino.
