Naa, it's the blocks. Don't forget we're talking 2.1 Posted by RS [Email] [Profile/Gallery]

litre engines, not the 2.0.
For one example, go back through Mike Stone's posts from 2000. He made the observation that the block alloy on the 2.1 litre engines was somewhat softer than the high-nickel alloy in the 2.0 litre engines. When you open up one of the 2.1s, the cross-hatching in the cylinders is often gone and sometimes there's a ring ridge. That doesn't occur with a 2.0 litre engine, and is just like you describe. The alloy in the 2.1 block has less nickel, and for some reason, tends to cause galvanic corrosion with the aluminum heads at a significantly faster rate than the 2.0 engines.
And, I agree with you that an aluminum head on a cast iron block is an invitation for galvanic corrosion. That's well-established and it's just chemistry.
