keep your eye on things like white crusties around the turbo joints, water in the oil, excess oil dripping from the distributor. Definitely change the water pump.

I had something similar happen to my '89 SPG. Four years ago, I had mysterious coolant leaks because of a bad water pump seal - there was probably localized overheating in the head. Two years ago, while driving down I-81 in the hilly part of PA (just south of beautiful downtown Frackville), the upper radiator hose developed an aneurism and blew - the temp gauge went up into the red and there were massive amounts of steam when I pulled over to the side of the road.

Recently, the car developed the symptoms that I described (except for water in the oil). In your case the seeds of headgasket failure likely have been planted, but the failure may not appear for a while.

You're right about not wanting to put water in a hot engine - localized temperature shock can cause all sorts of things like cracking of the block, head warpage, etc.

326K miles!!!! That's pretty good. It will enjoy a new headgasket. If you DIY, it'll be a good, if dirty and pain-inducing, experience.

(I'm doing the headgasket in my SPG in the very near future - once I get done with some emergency house repairs.)
