the rod should stay attached by itself. i too have become totally unafraid of taking the dash apart ha ha and the way i reattach it is to do all the wiring connections, then lay on my back just behind the stick shift and look up at the mess of wires - then i push the switch panel in while lining up the heater control knob rod with the D shaped dowel.
as i say, once the switch panel is pushed in, it's pressure should keep the rod in place.
funny story - i was trying to figure out the other day why my seatbelt idiot light was staying on, and in examining the other two lights (one of which was out but came on intermittently with what seemed to be no pattern) i figured i had a bad ground.
after lengthening one of the ground wires so i could get all three lights in their sockets, it finally hit me - as i was partially sitting on the drivers seat while fooling with this wiring, i was setting off some switch connected to the idiot light without even knowing it, causing the random illumination.
so i had the three lights in the wrong sockets...!

btw i disconnected the left-side rheostat, cut one of the female connectors, crimped a spade onto the wire and bypassed the rheostat, hoping for better illumination and less trouble! seems to have worked.
