Although it may not solve your particular problem, i urge everyone to follow jim's good advice and check their shift bushings. What you might have thought was just that "quirky" saab gearbox may be a worn bushing.
The selector rod (coming out the front of the shift box) is only supposed to do have two motions- rotation (a translation of the side-side motion of the shift lever) and front/back. Once the bushing has decayed the sideways motion of the lever no longer results in full rotating motion. This rotation is necessary for the 1st, 2nd and 5th gears (the ones you have to move the lever sideways for). In these gears, the selector needs to rotate fully before it can be pushed front/back. 1st seems to be the most problematic for some reason. 3rd and 4th don't need rotation because they are a straight shot from neutral.
Anyway . . .after i replaced my bushing the 1st gear difficulties have vanished- i no longer have to push it into 1st as i coast into the stoplight. Big improvement for $10 in parts.
