The inner driver is the cup on the side of the transmission that the drive axle goes into. Usually, but not always, it's the right one that has trouble because the heat from the downpipe liquifies the grease and dries it out (or it dribbles out through bad welds at the base of the inner driver.)
The best way is to put the front of the car on jackstands and approach it from the bottom. Reach up and see if you can move the axle up, down, or around in the driver. Then grab the driver and the axle and see if you can turn them against each other. You can also undo the hose clamp and pull the boot off the driver to see if there is any grease (or rust and little bits of tripod bearing) in there. A split in the boot is a dead giveaway that something is amiss.
