You only need a block heater below -20F. Unless the winters are cooler where you live, the block heater is just a method for wasting electricity. They get expenssive.
The blockheater is meant to keep the oil in your car from sludging or solidifying at low temperatures. That occurs at about -10F to -20F for regular oils and about -35 for synthetics like Mobile1.
I lived and am moving back to an area that goes below -40, so a block heater is a must. So is an electric battery blanket.
They do not really help the car "warm up" more quickly, nor do they really extend the life of your oil.
So I guess the real question is where do you live, how cold does it get, and do you want to waste alot of money on keeping the engine warm?
