i feel your pain, Russel.
i used a large (old) screwdriver, a hammer, some WD-40 and a Guinness to remove the locking collar on my '92 900T. i swear that the Guinness did a better job lubricating the threads than the WD-40 did. i used the screwdriver/hammer method on each tooth of the collar, moving counterclockwise around the circumference. 2 smacks and move on to the next tooth. took me 5 runs all the way around to finally see any movement (not to mention several missing plastic collar pieces and teeth). even though the screwdriver handle was plastic, i kept the hammer head wrapped in rags to prevent any sparking in the even of a slip. i was able to reuse the plastic collar even once i have the new pump assembly in place.
it may seem that the only option is to spend the $125 on the tool, but i might suggest trying to remove the collar piece by piece even and spending the money on another collar. just dont damage the tank threads!
