the issue with rocking the car is that you are having to move the entire weight of the vehicle. this is not always possible to do, if your driveway is inclined or if you have the car up on blocks or whatnot.
i have found that (while replacing clutch parts) the engine is rather easily turned by hand on the flywheel. the leverage available here is great, providing you have access (i.e. intake pipes, flywheel cover removed).
the engine rotates CLOCKWISE when looking at the engine from the FRONT of the car (sorry to use caps, i dont see an option for 'bold' or 'italics').
another option is to use a wrench on the flywheel (i found this to be more difficult) by using the open end. the problem was the closed end of the wrench contacting the firewall. the box end of the wrench, which is usually angled, must angle towards the engine in order to create the clearance necessary. the wrench will not sit flat on the flywheel bolt and thus you risk rounding the bolt head. removal of the A/C pump may be required, i dont know, as mine was removed long ago.
