Car: 1990 SPG with 152,000 miles. I've had it for 4 months and I bought it from the original owner.(i had a 89 SPG that I drove on the original trans for 40k miles without incident so I drive these good) Original transmission and clutch (clutch is slipping a little) The tranny was babied throughout its life.
It was 12 degrees out this morning. I usually let my car warm up but today I drove off right after starting it. I did not go over 3000rpm when shifting until it was fully warmed up. Shifting took much more effort than usual because of how cold the gear lube was I presume. After warming up it shifted fine. After about 10 minutes of running I got on the freeway for my 10 mile commute and i heard a slight faint whine in 4th and 5th. UH OH! Pinion bearing? Interestingly it still whined with the clutch out though. It did not whine in 3rd, 2nd, or 1st. Cripes! did my hurriedness ruin my pinion bearing? Stupid stupid me!
It is cold out and I am NOT doing this repair myself in the winter (I think I am capable of it and I have the equipment) I got a quote from 2 shops which were $2000+ for the trans R+R+rebuild and I should do the clutch, the power steering rack and pump, the control arm bushings, the alternator bushings, the etc etc. CRIPES. Do I commit to the car and the $3500 worth of repairs? Do I buy the viggen I wanted and sell it to a saab person? hrm... Be my therapist please! Thanks =) I want to keep it...
