Auto Transmission DYING:-(. Need suggestions please!

Past week, my 89 Saab 900 automatic wouldn't shift to 3rd gear just kept reving. This happened twice. First time I parked car and restarted and it then shifted to third just fine. Second time I put in neutral and back to drive and it shifted to third.
This only happened these two times but just last week. Car runs fine otherwise. I brought into indie Saab mechanic to change fluid etc.. but after looking at it, he said the clutch pack is too worn for adjustment and that changing fluids would not help. He said the idle is kinda high and maybe the cause of the tranny failure but too late for tranny even if it is adjusted. He said tranny wouldn't last much longer.
However, it seems to be running perfect right now- shifts a little late from 2nd to 3rd but it's always done that.
MY QUESTION is:
Is there ANYTHING I can do to prolong the life of the tranny? I graduate college in June and just need 6 more months out of it. I cannot be without a car to drive from school and work where I'm at.
Mechanic's suggestion was to avoid driving up hills and to avoid going fast in 3rd (is this possible?). I noticed when it's shifting to 2nd to 3rd, if I let go of accelerator, it shifts a little faster. would this help?
He said changing fluid, fixing idle or anything else would not help- it's too late. Clutch pack is too worn.
thanks for any suggestion to prolong my dying tranny for SIX MONTHS would be appreciated. thanks! happy new years
