Pretty plain it's not charging so it's likely the alternator. Car should be able to run on the alternator alone even with a flat dead battery or with negative cable pulled off (an old test that's highly not recommended in these days of sensitive electronic chips).
Most common problem with alternator is it needs brushes (brushes and voltage regulator are a combo package). Can be done with alternator in car, two screws to remove and replace. But most local mechanics aren't going to want to do this, instead want to put in a rebuilt alternator tho it costs you a bundle more and the work is a good bit more trouble (see townsendimports.com). (There are good practical reasons why mechanics do this.) NAPA may sell the brush-regulator package; I spotted them really reasonable at some place on line I found thru this site.
Also a lucky break for you could be that the ground wire from the alternator to the block has somehow broken, but it's truly a long shot.
If battery is really quite new and hasn't been dead long and left to freeze, it might take a charge and still have good life. So if you're really looking to save, fix the alternator and try to save battery. On the other hand, don't change batteries and then totally kill the new one by repeated discharges to flat dead and recharging, before finally caving in and fixing the alternator.
A good rule, always buy the best battery available.
