It sounds like Roger does not like ABS/SRS. 89+ are great and of those, 90+ have ABS/SRS (Airbag). I personally like ABS and have not had a problem with the 4 or 5 I have had. If it works when you buy it, it should continue to work as long as you perform fluid changes regularly. You may need an accumulator at some point, but that is not a deal killer IMO and it does give plenty of warning. The Airbag definitely helped me in my collision. It can be a hassle, but is easy to defeat (replace steering wheel with an older one and pull the flashing light)'89 has the famous dying engine ECU but is the first year of the stronger pinion bearing. '89 was the first year of base model 16V engine. Previously it was 8v CIS. All S and Turbo nodels will be 16V from '86+ By 'long tail' I am guessing you are referring to the 3 door model. Those were imported from '79-'93 and available in all trim levels (base, S, Turbo). I am a fan of '91-'93 for the above mentioned reasons. I have a hunch this will devolve into a religious discussion on ABS, but there goes.
