It might be that the brushes on the voltage regulator are worn down below their service limit. My '88 900S had similar symptoms before it died on a very rainy day.
You can replace the VR with the alternator in the car. On a turbo it's a bit more difficult than a N/A because there's a little more congestion around the oil filter pad. You can use a right-angle screwdriver to get to the screws on the Voltage regulator. Just don't drop them when you get them unthreaded. Don't get an Echlin unit from NAPA.
