The 89 and 90 boxes, both NA and turbo (internally, they're the same for U.S. market), are the strongest because they have an improved pinion bearing design over earlier boxes; Saab made a number of other changes as well. While the 91-93 'boxes have the upgraded pinion, too, they also have synchros that can apparently be somewhat prone to failure (I have a NA with ~95K with a trashed 2nd gear synchro).
I don't know if you've not been to Scanwest before and are posting because you may be doubting their advice (understandable, given some shops), but I can tell you (and tons of PNW Saabers, too) that Rob knows his sh!t -- he's been working on Saabs for almost 20 years now, and was involved with campaigning two Saabs to national Pro-Rally championships (a c900 and a ng900). Aside from having tons of both Saab-specific shop and racing experience, he and his crew are great guys. He is generous with time/advice, and has even come into the shop during the weekend, on his own time, to help me out with a project car (SW is a big supporter of local Saab enthusiasts).
