Hey, just wanted to let you know that I totally fixed it! The major problem was GUNK. I was able to get the vr out by obviously disconnecting the battery and the alternator wires. Getting the vr out was actually alot easier than I expected. I didnt have to disconnect any hoses; however, I did remove the oil pressure switch (I think that's what it's called) to get to one of the screws. Then it came right out. At first the brushes were non-existent, but once I cleaned everything up, the springs popped those puppies right up. I went ahead and ordered a new vr & brushes set, just cause it wouldnt hurt. I couldnt believe the sludge that was in this part. But I remembered this past summer we had to replace our oil pressure switch, but not before oil just sprayed all over the place and what's right next to that; yep you got it, the alternator. So now that I saved myself quite a few hundred dollars 'cause you guys know just a well as I do how every freekin' mechanic and auto parts salesman tells you that you have to get a new alt. I just want to go back and spit in thier faces. But what do ya'll suggest for me to use to clean the rest of my alt and just everything under the hood? There is just layers of oil all over the pace. If I can help it, I would prefer not to take out the rest of the alt., but I realize that it might be best for me to. Thank you to everyone on this board, without you all, this helpless little female would never have had the courage to even consider messing with it.
