The cabin air filter fits where the evaporator used to stick through the firewall. This was an industry first; the parts are incredibly rare but every once in a while you can find a Saab dealer that still has one and is dying to get rid of it. The part number is 94 79 981. You only need this once; it's a housing that snaps in where the evapper bolts in and it folds like an accordion to fit in there. A filter refill insert, which re-uses the housing, is available at eEuros and other site sponsors. I have hay fever, drive through pretty normal surroundings, and change mine about every year and a half.
Other disadvantage: No AC for help with defrosting, but as long as your heater core isn't urinating as much as mine is you shouldn't have trouble getting the windows clear.
Other advantages: Your car weighs less, and believe me, this will make your fuel mileage go up. That compressor weighs around 50 pounds I guess. You can check your belt tension, not to mention get the wiper linkage out and replace your water pump and alternator bushings and alternator brushes, without nearly as much harsh language. The engine compartment looks cleaner. If you live as far north as I do you can replace the cutout thermoswitch (in the upper rad hose) with the accessory washer fluid heater. And finally, you can wire it up (by making two connections) so the AC switch and relay turn on the auxiliary cooling fan, either to make cool noises, as a conversation piece, or to combat overheating.
My next task: getting the anti-frost switch out of the evaporator housing.
Don't worry about freon- from the sound of things there hasn't been any freon in your system for years, like mine. Just loosen the hose connections carefully and cover it with a rag.
About an hour or two after I take my convertible out of storage (and actually stop driving it) the AC's coming out of that one. It's a friggin' convertible folks. The sheer area of ventilation space is enough to keep the car cool in upstate NY.
