Whirling tranny noise at idle, not under load,

I searched around for a previous post on this but couldn't find any.
I have an '86 spg w/280k, that I have had for a couple months now. Anyway when the car is idling I get a whirling noise that goes away completely when I engage the clutch. For a long time I thought I had a failing pinion(most likely still do) but I am not having any real drivability problems under load and I can't hear what people have described as pinion noise at speed. The only time I notice a problem is at low speeds in any gear (ie parking lots, or slow coasting <15mph) the car seems to lurch on and off the power while being accompanied by normal gear noise.
I do not know the condition of my clutch, but I would like to say that the whirling is from aging syncros and the lurching from a streched chain drive, any help would be great. thanks
