Engine losing power and stalling

I just finished doing a head gasket on my 94 CE convertible. I have about 50 miles on it, since I put it back together. It was running OK, except it had occasional, momentary slight power losses, that felt almost like an automatic transmission shifting, that is, the slight hesitation, followed by resumption of power.
Today I went out for a drive, about 5 miles to my destination. Everything seemed fine. On the way back, it started losing power and stalling in a big way. If I didn't keep the engine revved up, it would sometimes stall at stop signs and lights. The engine wasn't missing, it just would start to lose power, sometimes idling OK, other times just stopping and having to be restarted. It was hard to tell if it was a fuel or electrical or air problem.
I've seen the posts about AMM, but this car doesnt seem to have the starting difficulties that people mention.
Can anyone shed some light? I'm worried I might have put something back together incorrectly.
