As the others have said, somewhere on the order of 300 or so sold in the US in '86.
Yes, they are rare. But I don't think that will increase the price much. This ain't no Ferrari. Saabs aren't particularly collectible, and the first year of production doesn't make it very special. Rare doesn't mean valuable. For most people looking for a OG900 convertible, being the first year might be a nice perk, but not worth spending extra money for.
The '86 turbo, convertible or not, is a nice car. The turbo doesn't have the watercooled jacket, but with regular oil changes and a cool-down after hard driving, it'll be fine. I had a '86 which I bought with 2K miles, and drove it to 163K with no problems. And it was running great at 163K.
The '86 does not have ABS - that didn't show up until '88. That can be good, as ABS adds cost and complexity. That's bad, because I think ABS is nice to have. The '86 also has the old style bumpers - the integrated bumpers showed up later.
Frankly, if I were looking convertible, just about any year '86-94 would be fine, just stick with a turbo. Non-turbos just aren't as much fun, in my opinion, and for a car that old, not a big difference. And I'd avoid the non-turbo 2.1l that showed up in 90 or so.
I wouldn't pay more for an '86, just because it was the first year. If you're into that sort of thing, good. But you probably won't get the money back when you go to sell.
