Now you know you don't have to fix it later.
My current car was in that position four years ago as a POS automatic with unknown history; it's just part of the used car game. The only way to get ahead is to buy a car that's in basically good shape to begin with, then work all the bugs out of it.
The harmonic balancer on my car was starting to slip three years before it finally got replaced. The head gasket waited a year almost. The POS autobox finally gave out and even though it took time and we put up with its wallet-draining I finally got it right.
AND when you finally reach the point where you've run out of things to fix, although it seems far off right now, you reach a state where not only does your car work WAY better than anyone else's 17-year-old pressing-toward-200K car, but you also know darned well that it's all your fault. It's your fault all these things are fixed and reliable now; it's your fault that you go to a junkyard filled with younger cars to fix up yours, and it's your fault the car has become reliable, efficient, somewhat enamored, and old all at the same time. With a '93 you are dealing with the last year of production. They only imported something like seven or eight thousand to the whole US that year. A shame.
In fact, my Saab-knowing friend has a copy of an ad featuring a 1993 900 3-door in cherry red. "Keep it in shape because we're not making this shape again." Hit the nail right on the head.
Cars can have curses; my mom's been rear-ended three times in two years in her current car when she's sitting at stoplights. However, you must be able to discern between the curses and the normal stuff. Old cars nip at your pocketbook in parts, labor, and insurance. New cars do that and tack on car payments which can get really expensive. My opinion of "old school" is that it's been around long enough to prove that it's durable.
So, keep at it, use this BB to its full advantage, watch out for snakes, and enjoy the ride. Show me another car that makes such a sweet sound when you push down on the gas in second or third gear, turbo or not.
