I'm pretty sure there are two types of seats used on 900s; '92 and later used the 9000-style seat which has different covers and mounting techniques. My '88 has clips under the front and rear, rods down the sides and hog rings holding a bit under the side-to-side seam in the middle. The '92 (with split seams on my car) has the aforementioned hoseshoe-shaped retainer ring with hooks near the seat pivot on the sides and hooks at the back.
The side-to-side stitch on my '92 had come apart, and fortunately it was only that one. Since the car's in storage, I pulled the cover off myself, brought it to a local auto upholsterer (look in the yellow pages or call a collision shop/detailer/dealer and get their recommendations) and had them re-stitch it. They ended up taking part of the cover apart to make sure everything lined up, and had it restitched and back to me that afternoon. It cost me something like $35 plus tax and materials; I was satisfied with that. If you don't pull the seatcover yourself it will undoubtedly get expensive in a hurry.
"Did you call here this morning?"
"Uh, no, I called three weeks or so ago."
"That's wierd because someone called here this morning asking about a split seam on a Saab seat cover."
Actual dialogue, I'm not kidding you! And this was in the middle of February!
