bypass valve in older non-turbo 8v's?

Today at the junkyard I spend some time looking at the engine bay of an '85 8v c900. The car looked normally aspirated, but there was a silver hose running from the exhaust manifold to the air box, and it looked like there was a turbo bypass valve very close to the fuel distributor.
What strange air/fuel system was I looking at? Why would a normally aspirated car need a bypass valve? Is this some sort of emissions equipment included to add air to the exhaust (for use in the Cat) if the mixture is too rich?
