I took my 85 900t to get a new exhaust and they told me it was IMPOSSIBLE to get a 3'' pipe over that axle. I said, "...hmm...gotta computer? I can show you half a dozen full SS exhaust kits right now."
If you want to piece together an exhaust, I wouldn't go cheap on that over-the-axle piece. Get someone to mandrell bend you a ss piece so it lasts. All the other stuff is pretty straight forward. You should be able to get a local shop to bend up some 4'' pipe so when it kinks smaller in the corners you'll still have at least 3'' of flow space.
Whatever works, huh?
