My R134a conversion was successful, and lesson filled. I did it by first removing all components and flushing all the old oil out. I even dis-assembled the compressor and flushed thoroughly, plus applied a silicone sealant around the gasket. Then reassembled with healthy o rings, and a new rec/drier unit, then the proper vacuum draw and appropriate oil and refrigerent mix. This was with an 8V early model compressor too. It worked for a week or two, then I heard a hissing sound under the hood. To my surprise, the high pressure needle valve on the compressor had "sprung" a leak. I had a replacement, made the swap then it worked fine. That is common from what I understand - the needle valves on the connection fittings tend to give out because of the increased pressure within the compressor because of the R134a. Conversion kits often include new needle valves for that reason. Then came a new 16V engine which included the upgraded compressor. That meant discharging the entire system and closing it off for the duration of the engine swap, then recharging. Again the conversion was a success after dis-assembly of the "new" compressor, cleaning thoroughly and sealing the gasket with silicone. This time I left the conversion fitting over the suction needle valve fitting. This was march of last year and over the course of the summer I noticed evidence of some refrigerant dripping from the screw on cap of that fitting. By the end of summer I had to recharge, most likely because of the R134a leaking out that cap. Then again not long ago while firing up the AC I had to recharge. But this time I decided to remove the conversion fitting from the compressor and screw down the stock cap nice and tight. So far no evidence of any leaking after a recharge. Oh yeah, it's nice and coldish. Maybe not as cold as with R12, but close. Keeps me from melting in the 100 plus temps I deal with on a daily basis during the summer.
