Saab has one of the most miserable air filter canisters/systems I've ever seen. Using a filterminder gauge, they all peg the filterminder at full throttle over 4K rpm!!!
Using a different filter will only prolong the life of the filter, i.e., amsoil or k&N or whatever (I prefer amsoil...K&N IMHO is just a marketing ploy like tornado inserts or whatever...and K&N are a pain to clean!)
My point is if you want to improve intake airflow you'll have to either move the air filter to the rhs of the car (battery in trunk) for the probably best solution (with a horn or something to an airspace or cold air) and that will often set you up for water ingestion if you hit a big puddle or somebody drenches you from the oncoming lane!) or keep it on the left hand side and put a horn through into the area ahead of the left wheel well.
See the common thread? You have to eliminate the multiple right angle bends in the induction system....
I once had a GP9 Performance air filter mounted right on the amm on an 87 900T...it worked fine for no air restriction, but it was right behind the intercooler and tended to get hot air most of the time...at full throttle maybe it eventually sucked cooler air, but you get the picture. It also got dirty very quickly but I used an amsoil foam filter (the one for stock 900 air canisters) as a sock over the K&N filter that came with the GP9 system...never had to clean the K&N but clean the amsoil every six months or once a year.
