here's the short of it . . . '89 SPG, 125K miles, running fine, losing a bit of coolant but nothing unmanagable. thought my biggest problem was the power steering going out.

then the following happened:

1) idle started to get unsteady. it went from holding solidly to 800-900rpm to bouncing between 600-1200rpm at stoplights. note to self: i should look into this. my thought was vaccuum leak.

2) next day . . . idle still racing a bit. will check when i get home.

3) same day . . . check engine light comes on, idle gets VERY hard to maintain, needs gas at stop just to keep running.

4) 5mins later . . . pull into my parking spot at home, and steam starts shooting out of my hood

5) 1min later . . . steam flow has slowed down, so i pop the hood . . . find a top hose has a small split

6) worried about loss of coolant to head, but hose is about even with the head's level, maybe i won't crack it . . . or should i add H2O to the tank . . . which might wind up cracking it anyway

7) what to do???

8) i add coolant to the tank slowly. let's just wait and see i guess

9) next day . . . replace hose . . . turn ignition, saab starts (whew)

10) idle is VERY rough (crap)

11) why? find H2O has pooled in the recess where the plugs are, arcing between plugs

12) dry off the H2O, start saab, idles smoothly (hooray)

13) find vaccuum line off . . . great, now i've solved that revving idle problem

14) not so fast . . . why is there moisture in the exhaust?

15) idle slowly becomes rough, getting rougher . . . oh no.

15) go for test drive . . . man, sure feels like a cracked head. sluggish, needs plenty of gas at stop signs, take it back home.

16) still moisture coming out of the exhaust.

17) go to saabnet.com and find out what's up.

so that's it . . . i'm *still* not sure exactly what happened. did the head crack BEFORE The hose split (when the idle got VERY bad before getting home)? is the head even split? sure runs like it. did the head crack BEFORE i added the coolant to the tank? did the small coolant leak become a BIG coolant leak sometime during the day (the temp guage never registered anything above mid-line temp)?

question:

1) what should i be thinking at this point, and what am i looking for?

2) tips on head removal if needed?

3) any kind of head upgrades i should look at for my SPG if i do need a new one?

thanks fellas.

slade.
