I've done the pull it by yourself method and that was painful for a number of reasons, mostly because I don't have the proper space at home for doing it properly (uneven soft asphalt, on a slope). Even in a proper shop doing a second engine the job was awful.

Reason I mentioned the clean plugs on this car was because I wanted to see the general condition. They were worn, but in the right way. Also, this engine - from which I'm taking the tranny - is from a wrecked car, meaning it was totaled because of a smash-up, not because of engine maintenance issues. Without an odometer to read miles, things like engine/compartment/component conditions can tell something about the transmission.
