Weak defrost/uneven heating/clogged core fixable?

I struggled all Winter to keep my windshield clear and my car warm, and have read the posts here that blame clogged heater cores, some due to block sealer treatments, one of which I used last Fall after my headgasket swap. What I didn't get from those posts is whether the heater cores were successfully cleaned like radiators or had to be replaced. Details anyone?
