Have you modified the car so both cooling fans switch on to cool the engine, or is it just one coming on?
Do you have AC? If so, does it still work? If not, do you plan to fix it?

Here's what I'm getting at- two things.
First, the 2.1L motors were wired from the factory so only one cooling fan comes on to cool the motor; the other fan operates when the AC is in operation. A Service Bulletin was issued with instructions to correct this problem; e-mail me if you want a copy. A good way to tell, besides counting the number of fans cooling your engine, is noting if your car still has a relay in the main fuse/relay panel in the position for "Cooling Fan."
Secondly, I live in upstate NY and believe air conditioning is unnecessary, not to mention R12 systems being expensive and a tad bit irresponsible to fix. I remove these systems from my car. Even if you do not, if your AC is inoperative, remove the AC belt, disconnect the single wire going to the compressor, and jumper together the two blue wire leads that plug in to the pressure switch on the reciever/drier unit in the RH wheelwell. By doing this, you trick the AC relays into thinking everything's fine, although the AC compressor clutch cannot engage (wire removed) and even if it did the belt would not be spinning it. This turns your cute little "snowflake" button on the dash into a control for the starboard side engine cooling fan! If your AC is discharged or otherwise malfunctioning, this fan will not come on, assuming the factory cooling fan wiring is still present.
Double check: is the coolant concentration as close to 50 percent as you can get it? More coolant is NOT better here.
Also, how long do/does your cooling fan(s) stay on for? Will they run if you switch the ignition key off? A great sign of a faulty cooling fan relay is when one or both fans (depending on if the wiring update is done) will only run for short spurts and will not stay on with the key off. What the cooling fan relay does is acts as a capacitor and after the thermoswitch tells the fans to turn on, the relay keeps them running for 30 seconds or so. If the relay is faulty, the fans may only act on the thermoswitch's input, for example, turn on when the switch closes, but then turn right back off after it opens up again when the coolant has gone below 82 C.
Another way the cooling fan relay fails is by sticking the fans on after you leave the car, running the battery dead in short order.
A fresh, newer-design coolant cap (yellow as opposed to black) is still a good idea. Especially on the 8 valvers, if things don't pressurize right you form hot spots around the head, eventually letting it crack.
Get back to us on these points. My 88 overheated for four years and one head gasket before I got it licked; I sincerely hope it is not as long for you!
