after replacing the alternator, my 900 wouldn't start. i charged the battery with a trickle charger, checked the plugs, the coil, the rotor, even replaced the old positive battery cable (the negative doesn't look too bad). by not starting, i mean that the engine was definitely cranking, but there was no ignition. after a few more days head scratching, i tried to start the car again and it started.
so i let it run for a while before trying to drive it anywhere. after about ten minutes, the tachometer started freaking out, going down to zero while the engine was running, then jumping back to the appropriate idle speed, after a minute or two of this, the engine stalled out. trying to start it again resulted in an absolute lack of co-operation from the car. this time, there is absolutely no response from the engine, save all the pretty red lights on the dash lighting up. no cranking, not even the whine of the starter.
i recharged the battery, and tried it again a few days later. the same thing happened.
other problems related or not:
i replaced the alternator b/c the car's charging system went from weak to nada. in the process, i completely removed the a/c compressor (it was dead anyway).
i noticed a few wires at the front of the car, i think they're related to the climate control system, were not only corroded, but seemed to have "liquefied" on their own (this is an 85, after all).
brakes have a tendency to stick after leaving the car overnight, pumping the brakes for a few minutes seems to fix that problem.
i'm trying to figure out if i should take this to a mechanic to just get running so i can collect $650 from the state's buy back program for old cars, or if i should just try to figure out what this is all about and make nice with my silver streak again.
