There is an oil pressure relief valve designed to dump high pressure caused by blockage, etc. It is a piston and spring design and sometimes a little debris will cause the piston to hang up. It is accessible if you find that your sender is not the problem. Usually you can clean the piston and bore and the problem will go away.
