underwhelming ride after new front shocks+a-arms

this weekend I finished rebuilding the front suspension on my '88 S. New parts include tie rod ends, shocks (boge/sachs), brake discs and pads, lower a-arms and a-arm bushings. Ball joints are less than 5 k miles old.
I just had an alignment today, and must say that on the whole I'm unimpressed with the ride of the car. Minneapolis streets are terribly rough and the car still seems quite bouncy. Most of the rattles have disappeared though, so I guess there's some merit to replacing a bunch of stuff.
I havn't yet replaced the rear shocks, although the rear springs have been upgraded. Could this be part of my problem?
For those in Minneapolis, "Paul Williams Tire", on Lake Street near Lyndale, is a nice shop. they've got an ok waiting room, price for alignment was $50, and Jerry didn't badmouth them when I asked about the quality of their work several months ago.
