Re: Oil light - Possible Cause, (and cheap) Posted by EverettDave [Email] (#1894) [Profile/Gallery] (more from EverettDave) on Sun, 1 May 2005 13:13:15 In Reply to: Oil light, markka, Sun, 1 May 2005 08:06:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My friend's 9000CDE gave her plenty of concern when her oil warning light would stay lit after engine warmup at idle speeds. Light did go out at cold start, but would illuminate at low speeds when engine hot. I advised her to get a real oil pressure test at our neighborhood shop (Conaway Motors in Everett, WA -high recommendation) before she went any further. Told her there is real risk of destroying engine, gotta investigate the cause.
Shop found that her oil pressure sender "had a hole in it", and it was releasing some pressure, so at $13 for the part, it was a wonderful outcome. There are a number of other potential causes of course, ie: worn bearings, oil sludge around pump pickup, worn out oil pump, leaking oil pump gasket, for a few. Get it investigated - Don't risk burning up the motor!
