Congratulations, you've re-re-rekindled the auto versus manual debate.
Plainly put, I avoid autos like the plague. Having driven my '88 8 valve with both, and managing to do the swap pretty much myself, I'll never go back to only two pedals. I took care of the gearbox, so did the two previous owners. It just plain wore out at 156K. Aside from having half as much noise in the cabin on an expressway, getting 8-10 MPG better, and actually having the chance of accelerating when needed, the loss of the autobox gives me better control in the snow, less engine and FI wear, and a new life to the car. There are other reasons too. I drive for extreme gas mileage, and the auto just plain sucked in that regard. Not enough gears (3) to get the job done.
I hate to vent but that auto drank fuel and didn't move the car quickly, and I know what it's like without it. I don't necessarily hate them, but I won't drive one by choice. I may buy another auto car, maybe an '86 auto convertible? But only with the intention of instantly converting the car to how it was supposed to be built. Does your left leg and your brain work?
