Had fuel pump problems on my 87 900s a few years back. Fuel pump would shut down every 50 miles or so while on a trip until I kept the gas tank above 1/2 full. turns out the supply pump was going out and apparently needed the cooling effect of more gas.
Bentley says:1986-88 non-turbo & 1985-89 turbo - Roller type pump. This one has a supply pump which feed gas into a reservoir holding the fuel pump. I got a used supply pump - much cheaper than the main pump.
1989 & later non-turbo & 1990 & later turbo - rotor type pump. No separate supply pump but uses an ejector pump which picks up additional gas from the bottom of the tank and forces it into the reservoir.
