Convertible top not working right

Hi,
I have a '92 900 turbo convertible.
This morning while taking the top down I heard a "pop". I stopped, and continued carefully and it continued to work, but "asked for a little help".
Later, it seemed to be sluggish starting to go back up, but went up OK. Taking it down later, I needed to give it a hand again.
I looked at it more closely tonight. I opened the bypass valve, and raised and lowered the top manually, and it went smoothly. I didn't see anything wrong with the mechanics, from what I could see. I closed the bypass again and tried it with the button, it went up without problems, but taking it back down, it doesn't seem to catch unless I push it up the first 10 inches. (the hydraulic pump runs, but the top doesn't begin to retract.)
I noticed that the bypass valve wasn't in its clip, but floating on the lines. (source of the "pop") I don't see any sign of leaking fluid around the pump, or from the valve.
Any suggestions on what to look at next?
Thanks,
Jeff
