the same size. People put 1157s in where 1156s (or their Euro-equivalents) go and vice versa. It used to be easier to tell that you were putting the wrong bulb in when cars had metal bulb sockets.
The nice thing about the Sylvania euro-bulbs vs the North American-style bulbs is that, instead of having contacts that are round on the bulb base, the euro-bulbs have crescent-shaped contact points, so the bulbs can rattle around a bit and still maintain their electrical connection.
