I'm with RS on this one. Try tappin the alternator, say with a short chunk of 2x4, to see if the light goes out. If it does you bought some time (maybe very little time) and you also diagnosed worn out brushes. Though tapping might not do anything either, and it could still be worn out brushes.
They sometimes stick in packed-in powdered carbon and have a little life left if freed up.
Don't replace the alternator, it's more of a pain to remove than you want and the windings and bearings and probably the voltage regulator itself are probably all good for another 200,000. Do a search here on brushes or voltage regulator and you'll see what's involved:
Two screws (a little hard to reach and the regulator-brush holder combo pulls right out. Judging if the brushes are too worn is more a matter of experience but new ones should stick out a good ways, worn ones only a little.
You can buy a new voltage regulator from site sponsor parts places (BOSCH recommended) and back in and go.
