kickdown cable fubared?

The kickdown cable (transmission throttle cable) on my '87 900s has a LOT of slack between the bracket w/ locknuts and the throttle itself. This is undoubtedly the result of some unknowledgeable person (once again) tweaking with it a lot - so much that the locknuts were pushing the cable sheatch back. I can pull the cable out of the sheath a good inch or so, but no more. There doesn't seem to be any spring at all after that inch or so. I can also shove it back into the sheath so the crimp is very near the end of the cable sheath, but it will come right back out and stay there when the accelerator is stepped on. I've searched old BB posts, and read the blurb on Townsend's but still am at the same point. Seeems to me that it's not broke or I could pull it all the way out. But it also seems that the darn cable should stay where it's supposed to be. What is wrong here?
