yes, it won't get as cold as r-12, but you can get good results. i've done a few conversions with pretty good results (not on saabs however). my most half-assed involved a system that had been open (big hole) for over a year. all i did was put in a new drier, dumped in oil/134a, and was good to go. worked great for 3 years. if i convert my current system (i topped it off with freeze-12 a few months ago, which worked awesome, but is slowly leaking), my plan is:
1. evacuate system, +/- draining compressor. probably won't bother with this unless i need to replace compressor. evacuation is easy; all that water/dirt/oil will reduce efficiency/system life. but i've done without without a problem.
2. +/- replace o-rings, though probably not.
3. new receiver/drier--this i think is essential.
4. 134a, and on my way to coolness!
o-rings aren't essential; if they leak, you replace 'em. 134a is cheap. of course, it's pretty easy to do the first time around.
getting out all the oil isn't necc. the conversion kit oils are compatible. only problem is you might lower efficiency somewhat by having too much oil in there.
compressor? seriously, you're going to change this before definitely knowing if it works or not? no reason stock compressor won't work that i can see.
