The procedure that a lot of 5-speed oil changers use is to drain it, fill it with 10W30 and run it for a week. Re-drain and refill. Run it for a few weeks. Re-drain and refill. Keep that in and change the transmission oil every other engine oil change or something like once a year.
That flushes out the particulates that grind up the bearings. When I changed the oil in my '89 the first time, it had so much brass swarf that it looked almost like the gold model paint that I bought as a kid.
You will probably want to buy a new rear cover gasket every time.
Along with that, the best preventative maintenance includes coming to a full stop and putting it in other gears before putting it into reverse, treating first and second gears nicely.
If it gets tough to shift into first or reverse, be prepared to look at the clutch, clutch hydraulics, and replace the pilot bearing.
