Repairing odometers

Thanks for the advice I received from my post yesterday on fixing an odometer. Given what little info I could find, it seems to be a rather tricky process that most don't care to undertake, and given the number of classifieds listing a broken speedo, many just ignore the problem.
A local repair shop estimated repairs to the unit I brought in (out of the car) at $250-$300 and 6-10 days. I found a Siemens/VDO recommended shop that would do the job for $122 with a one day turn around and a one year guarantee. My unit should be hitting the bench in NC before noon today. Later yesterday, I received another quote for a shop in Texas for $75.
Getting the unit out of the car is not an easy task, but it's also not difficult. The tough part is all the down time. A solution? Find another speedo that can be repaired, and do it ahead of time. When you're ready to tackle yours, you'll have one for replacement. Then send the broken one off for repair and offer it for sale on the site. We can pass around a few forever. Kevin
