Folks,
I have been busy on my old '84S this weekend. I replaced the
passenger side inner driver, axle, and CV joint with a good used one
of same vintage. New boots and grease for both. Boy, was that a
chore! (It was my first time at that job.) I'm glad it's done, but
my '87 SPG needs the same thing--only it's inner driver is in MUCH
worse shape and I'll have to order parts--my parts car is an '84S,
not an '87.
Anyhow, back to what my title said this post is about...
I "fixed" my annoying vacuum leak in the HVAC system on my '84S,
you know, the one which causes the air to gradually switch to the
defrost vents instead of coming out the center and side dash vents when the dash switch is at the little <> or big <> positions--a
common OG 900 malady.
Turned out the hose (stamped with the number 7, connected to
the air distribution switch) was the culprit. I found it would not hold vacuum when testing it with my hand-powered vacuum pump. I put a kink in that hose, slipped a zip-tie over it, and pulled zip-tie tight to shut off the leak. (I think it leads to the floor vent vacuum motor, but am not
sure. I rarely use the floor vents in the summer.)
OK, I realize this is just a "band-aid" to the problem and not a REAL fix, but I've put up with this annoying leak since Nov. 2001 when I bought the car and my previous '84S had the same problem (which makes about ten years of same problem). So, I'm a happy camper!!!
Just thought all you SAABers would like to know that this #7 hose might be your culprit, too.
