Q re Hatch Wiring

I hit the pick-n-pull today to nab a radiator support to fix Seattle's parting gift to me...a broken nose and front teeth.
As luck would have it, there was a black hatch in perfect shape. (mine had some substandard body work done to it by a previous owner and it's always kind of bothered me.)
Not knowing just how the wiring ran I ended up pulling the tubes that seal the wiring between the body and hatch to expose the wires. I tugged as much as I could out of the car body and cut the wires. Now I'm pondering the most efficient way to rewire the hatch.
Should I try to pull the wiring harness out of my old hatch and re-insert into the new hatch or just splice the wires and tuck them into the body/headliner area?
Has anyone done this task who would care to share some lessons learned?
Namaste,
Dave
