Does the shifter index to all of the gears like it normally does?
Just for the heck of it, look to see if one of the inner drivers is spinning while the drive axle is stationary. It might be that one of the tripod bearings gave up the ghost. At the least you'd be out the cost of a rebuilt drive axle and maybe also need a new inner driver. That's the least expensive failure mode I can think of.
Listen for the whirring of the primary drive chains, too.
